Michael Shonka is a professional sustainable solar energy scientist, solar equipment designer and installer. Michael’s understanding of solar energy and his company will assist people in saving money on their energy bills. Michael is there at the preparation portion of the Lauritzen Gardens Legobotics Arbor Day event to demonstrate the proper use of his solar instrumentation, including the solar site collector. This tool assists the team in locating, following and predicting the path of the sunlight across the Earth’s surface, thereby creating a sun chart. Since our sun is a star to someone else’s galaxy, our sun can be found in another extraterrestial being’s star chart, as inspired by the blog entry on the Behlen Observatory. A solar site planner must evaluate the presence of the sun’s energy with respect to elevation and azimuth relative to the point on the Earth’s surface where installation of solar collection equipment is desired. The solar equipment siting person must also evaluate whether objects and conditions that impede the transfer of the sun’s energy such as trees are clear enough relative to the site so that maximum energy absorption can take place. Solar Energy Science is Fun!
